Sabore Ole Oyie - Kenya

Oldonyo-Rasha Water Project
Educating Girls by Liberating Them from the Task of Hauling Water

The Maasai people are the least educated tribe and the most marginalized community in Kenya. Currently 40% to 50% of Maasai girls do not attend school.  The Olsonyo-Rasha Water Project will create water wells close to the community to relieve girls from the backbreaking chore and dangers of collecting water at the river, allowing them the opportunity to attend school.  During a two year break from school to become a warrior and learn the life and ways of the Maasai young men, Sabore came to understand the importance of education and realized that Massai people can hold a pen in the right hand and a spear in the left.  Sabore was selected for this leadership position by his community because he was the first person in the village to finish high school and was selected to be one of the Chiefs.
