Educating Children and Teachers to Change Socioeconomics

Mary believes the world will change when children are provided with the gift of education.  Her experiences working in the field of education as a teacher, part-time lecturer, trainer, and administrator in remote underprivileged communities have shaped her as a leader.  As the Regional Programme Director for Room to Read, Mary’s vision is to create an outreach center to provide teachers with opportunities, materials and an environment to help them improve their teaching skills.  In particular teachers will be trained to tutor girl students in elementary reading and writing to give them an advantage in primary school. A strong foundation in reading expands children’s abilities and self-confidence to excel in all subjects.  This will enable more youth to continue in school, graduate from higher education institutions, and better contribute to South Africa’s economy.
